6 Tips on the Art of Choosing Essential Oils for a Blend

By now, the benefits of essential oils and their myriad uses are no secret. Humans have been using them for thousands of years, and even modern skeptics now recognize that the positive effects of essential oil usage are increasingly well-documented.

It’s easy enough to rattle off a list of oils and the way specific oils can enhance a person’s life, but what many new to the world of essential oils may not realize is that there are almost limitless possibilities in something you may not have considered: oil blends.

And this is something you can do on your own, often to stunning effect.

Shaman Essential Oils offers a line of blends already, of course. For example, our Slimmer Aromatherapy blend brings together ginger, lemon, peppermint, and Red Mandarin oils for a blend designed to help you curb the urge towards “emotional eating,” while our Cheer blend combines orange, Ylang Ylang, anise and basil sweet for a blend that will lift your mood.

You may be surprised to learn, however, that with a little thought you can create some uplifting essential oil blends that are unique to you.

Here are some tips to keep in mind during your journey of experimentation and discovery: 

  1. What are your goals?

    Essential oils can be used for many reasons. Are you looking for a pleasant aroma to lift your spirits? Something to calm yourself? A blend to enhance your energy in the morning? Answering these questions is key to creating an effective blend.

  2. How do you plan to use it?

    Will you be using this blend on your skin? As a perfume? As part of your aromatherapy? Again, knowing how you plan to use it will play a major role in determining what oils you choose.

  3. What properties will help you achieve your goals?

    If you want a blend that will stimulate your mind in the morning, what properties will help accomplish that? When you look at Shaman Lavender Oil, for example, does its balancing, calming properties fit with what you envision?

  4. Did you check the health and safety information?

    You should never use an essential oil without understanding the safety precautions associated with it and how they apply to you. For example, Shaman Oregano Oil has potent antibacterial properties, but it is not recommend for people with weakened immune systems. Be informed before you blend!

  5. Which oils will help you meet your goals?

    Now that you know what you want to accomplish, how you’ll use your blend, and the key properties you are looking for in the individual oils you will use, it’s time to select your oils. Or rather, to begin narrowing down the list, because there is one more thing to take into consideration:

  6. What kind of compatibility do your chosen oils have with one another?

    When you browse the many essential oils Shaman offers, such as Shaman Juniper Red Oil or Sage Organic Oil, note the aromatic descriptions. For the best blends, you want to look for compatibility and likeness there. For example, floral oils may go well with woodsy or citrusy oils, but may not be a good match for minty oils.

 After following the above steps, you should have narrowed down a handful of oils to use. We recommend selecting three to four of them for your first blend.

All that’s left to do now is to blend! A few drops (at most) of each will do the trick.
