Frankincense Essential Oil
Frankincense essential oil comes from the resin of the Boswellia tree commonly found in India, Somalia and Pakistan. The Boswellia tree can reach heights ranging from 7 feet to 26 feet and has one or more trunks. The tree produces tiny light yellow owers that have ve petals. Small cuts are made in the bark of the tree where the resin will then leak out and harden. The hardened resin is scraped of and then steam distilled to produce the essential oil, frankincense.
It is most well known as being a gift brought to the baby Jesus in the New Testament. Frankincense was traded in the Middle East and Africa thousands of years ago. It was believed to be used as incense in religious ceremonies as well as medicinally. It has great meditative qualities and is used for grounding and deep breath work. It has anti-anxiety and depression-reducing abilities without and side effects of traditional medicine.
Medicinally, frankincense has recently had promising research in anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor effects when tested in lab studies. It has been shown to help fight specific types of cancer. It has antiseptic and antimicrobial effects and can be used to eliminate germs in the body and in the home. It can be used in place of chemical cleaner. Frankincense is especially effective when combined with myrrh oil for it’s synergistic work against certain pathogens.
Thinking about the frankincense resin’s job in nature, it is like a scab that forms when the bark of the tree is cut. It’s protecting the tree from anything getting inside the injury. Our skin also benefits from frankincense. It strengthens skin and improves it’s tone and elasticity. It reduces redness and irritation and soothes dry and cracked skin. It is often used in natural remedies to reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks.
